Trooper T. Michael KellyNew York State Police

Trooper T. Michael Kelly and Trooper Kenneth Poormon were killed when their cruiser was struck by a tractor-trailer as they were making a U-turn.

The two officers were patrolling on State Route 28 in Ulster County, New York, when they made the U-turn in an attempt to stop a traffic violator. Both officers were killed instantly.

Trooper Kelly had been employed with the New York State Police for 22 years, and is survived by his wife, son, and daughter.

Trooper Kenneth A. PoormonNew York State Police

Trooper Kenneth Poormon and Trooper Truscott Kelly were killed when their cruiser was struck by a tractor-trailer as they were making a U-turn.

The two officers were patrolling on State Route 28 in Ulster County, New York, when they made the U-turn in an attempt to stop a traffic violator. Both officers were killed instantly.

Trooper Poormon had been employed with the New York State Police for less than a year.

End of Watch: November 26, 1985 

Trooper Thomas F. HudsonNew York State Police

Trooper Hudson was killed when a tractor trailer struck the rear of his patrol car on I-87 in Saratoga. Trooper Hudson had stopped behind another disabled tractor trailer when the incident happened. The driver of the disabled vehicle was killed also.

Trooper Hudson had served with the New York State Police for 15 years and was assigned to Saratoga at the time.

Trooper Paul AshburnNew York State Police

Trooper Ashburn was killed when a tractor-trailer struck him and the vehicle he had stopped for a traffic infraction.

Trooper Brian N. RovnakNew York State Police

Trooper Rovnak was killed in an accident on I-84 while he and his partner were en route to meet other troopers. Trooper Rovnak was a Vietnam War veteran and had been with the agency for 16 years.

End of Watch: August 8, 1980 

Trooper James A. Kelly, Jr.New York State Police

Trooper James Kelly was killed when a vehicle operated by an intoxicated driver crossed the double yellow lines and struck his patrol car sending it airborne.

The driver was charged with driving while intoxicated and criminal negligent homicide.

Trooper Kelly had served with the New York State Police for seven years. He is survived by his wife and three children.

End of Watch: October 24, 1974 

Trooper Emerson J. Dillon, Jr.New York State Police

Trooper Emerson Dillon was shot and killed after stopping a suspicious vehicle on the New York State Thruway near Canastota.

Unknown to Trooper Dillon, the two occupants had just committed an armed robbery and were fleeing the scene. Trooper Dillon approached the car and removed one of the suspects. During the ensuing scuffle the second occupant exited the car and shot Trooper Dillon. Before he died Trooper Dillon was able to return fire, striking the suspect vehicle as it fled.

Two suspects were apprehended later that day. A third suspect was apprehended the following day in New York City. The suspect who shot Trooper Dillon was convicted of second degree murder and sentenced to life in prison. One of the other two suspects died in prison while serving a 25-year sentence.

Trooper Dillon was assigned to Troop T and had served with the agency for 16 years. He was survived by his wife and six children.

End of Watch: November 21, 1970 

Investigator John F. CotterNew York State Police

Investigator Cotter was killed in an automobile accident on Route 17, in Sullivan County, while returning to the Middletown Station after testifying in a trial.

Investigator Cotter was assigned to the Middletown Bureau of Criminal Investigations.

End of Watch: March 1, 1970 

Trooper John G. GeorgeNew York State Police

Trooper George died after being overcome by carbon monoxide poisoning. He and his partner had parked on the side of Route 5 in the Village of Herkimer to complete their daily reports. The tailpipes of their patrol car were blocked by a snow bank, which lead to the car filling with the carbon monoxide. When the two troopers were discovered they were taken to Herkimer Memorial Hospital. Trooper George's partner recovered but Trooper George died as a result of the exposure.

Trooper George had served with the New York State Police for 8 years.

Trooper Richard T. JunaNew York State Police

Troper Juna was killed in an automobile accident on State Highway 7 near Otego while reporting for work.
